The cloud services provider competes with Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, IBM and others.
Most Silicon Valley tech companies are either looking to enter India, or strengthen their existing operations with new deals, investments, and even appointments. Salesforce.com, the $8 billion cloud computing giant founded by Oracle’s Marc Benioff, is the latest. The company has just appointed a country head for India for the first time, according to a ToI report. Sunil Jose, a former VP at Oracle, will now serve as Senior Area VP and Country Leader, Salesforce India and will report to the Asia-Pacific office.
Salesforce is already a potent player in India. The cloud services provider entered the country in 2005, and is now the third largest in the market with a 8.7 percent share, according to IDC. The public cloud services market, which is growing at 30 percent year-on-year, is dominated by Amazon Web Services (14.7 percent share), and Microsoft (12.7 percent share). Salesforce is not too far behind, and its partners in India are in the sectors of manufacturing, healthcare and BFSI. Some new age startups like Urban Ladder and InMobi also avail of its services. The company employs 900 people in India, and is likely to create half-a-million more jobs by 2020, says IDC. “We’ve been in India since 2005 and have grown more than double year-on-year. Salesforce and its ecosystem will create nearly 500,000 jobs and drive $4.2 billion in GDP impact to the Indian economy by the year 2020,” Jose was quoted as saying. Last year, Salesforce opened its Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad, which is its largest global office outside San Francisco (where the company is headquartered). Jose says that India is its fastest-growing market in the world and his “appointment is a reflection of that growth”.
Traditionally a CRM software provider, Salesforce is now expanding its footprint in newer areas like mobile, social, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence to meet the evolving needs of connected customers. The Salesforce IoT Cloud has even partnered with AWS IoT to “find new ways to combine device data with customer data – empowering businesses to create meaningful customer experiences based on real-time activity across connected devices,” according to the company blog.
